HAPPIER PEOPLE WATCH LESS TV

Hi,

I read an article recently that said happy people watch less TV—do you know any thing about this?

Dear Reader,

Indeed, a University of Maryland study published in the most recent Social Indicators Research journal found that happy people spend less time watching television than unhappy people.  Instead, the happy spend a lot of time socializing, reading the newspaper and going to church.  It’s unclear if this means that people watch TV because they are unhappy, or if watching it makes you less happy.  Likewise, it’s impossible to say that you will get happier if you switch off the set.  TV viewing is the only activity that this study found unhappy people engage in more significantly than their happy counterparts.  We do know that there is a direct relationship between not working and watching more TV.

The researchers reported their findings after reviewing the daily activity diaries of tens of thousands of people spanning three decades, a body of data collected by the University of Chicago.
