HOW QUICK IS QUICK CALM?
I tried the quick calm technique in this site—it felt okay to do it, but beyond that well, not much happened. Am I doing it correctly? How fast does it work?
Dear Reader,
For other Readers who sped by or missed Quick Calm, it is a diaphragmatic breathing exercise designed to take the edge off and reverse stress responses to things like arguments, maddening news, screaming kids, traffic, ringing phones at 3 a.m., etc. Quick Calm can also prevent panic episodes, angry outbursts, and the need to apologize for them later.
Concentration can be restored with a little Quick Calm, too. As you pointed out, this technique can be found in the relax now! section of thestresscoach.com as a free 4-minute audio stream, although quicker versions can work wonders, too. Bully for you for trying Quick Calm. If you followed along with the directions and it felt okay, then you probably did it just fine. Your passing grade also suggests that Quick Calm was timely in its effect on you, but here’s betting that you hadn’t been bitten by a dog or lost your wallet right before you hit the play button.
The benefits of Quick Calm will not be as apparent and dramatic when you try it under stress-free conditions. However, familiarizing yourself with Quick Calm when you’re calm will certainly enhance your use of it when it’s really needed. Note to impatient seekers of instant gratification: setting your house on fire so you can test Quick Calm’s usefulness during a sudden stressor is not recommended. There will be plenty of opportunities for you to use it—just you wait.
