BEST PLACES TO LOOK FOR LOCAL STRESS WORKSHOPS

Hi,

Where can I find in-person stress management workshops or courses in the Washington, D.C. area?

Dear Asker,

Here’s a top 10 list of entities that tend to sponsor stress management programming whether you’re in Washington, D.C. or Washington State:

  1. Hospitals
  2. Human resources departments
  3. Insurance companies
  4. Health-related organizations such as the American Heart Association
  5. Colleges and Universities
  6. Health clubs, recreation centers and spas
  7. Unions
  8. Professional, social and service associations such as AARP
  9. Community centers
  10. Government agencies such as health and parks departments

Searching on craigslist.org in your area under the “lessons” and “community” categories may include scheduled sessions from the sources above as well as from other providers.  If you’re interested in specific stress management strategies like yoga and meditation, you might go right to schools, centers or organizations that focus on these techniques.

Once you find some organized stress reduction opportunities, evaluate your choices.  Session producers should provide the following information on their promotional material or by request:

  • The name and mission of the program’s sponsor
  • The name of the program’s teacher or leader, and her/his credentials
  • A list of specific information, skills and mindsets that participants are expected to take away from the program
  • Contact information so that interested attendees can call and email with additional questions
  • References

Good luck with your search,

Les
