STRESS AND THE CITY

I moved to New York from a small Wisconsin town about nine months ago for work.  I love it like the song says, but it is stressful because it never stops.  The constant noise, traffic, movement and people sometimes make me want to run screaming back to the country, but I don’t have the luxury right now of traveling to quieter places.  Do you have suggestions for urbanites in search of calm?

Thank you,

Miss Wiss

Welcome to New York, Miss Wiss!

Sounds like you need to connect with some of NYC’s cool spots.  No, not minimalist lounges with fish tanks and $15 cocktails, but peaceful spaces that let you disconnect from the city that never sleeps.  It’s the bench, the table or the patch of grass that acts like an eye in the middle of this hurricane of stimuli that you noted in your question.  Since half the fun is discovering these break pads on your own, and pretending they are your own, I’m not going to list specific locations or my favorite oases.  Instead, consider these broader destination categories and plan some outings in search of your peace of New York… or any other city:

  • Parks
  • Libraries
  • Museums
  • Gardens
  • Historic buildings
  • Galleries
  • Religious or spiritual sanctuaries
  • Piers
  • Lobbies
  • Cafes
  • Rooftops

Think of New York as an amazing training ground for stress management, and as another song sort of goes: If you can relax there, you can relax anywhere.
