IS SEX EXERCISE? WHAT ABOUT RUSHING?

Les,

I don’t exercise cause i hate it. But i do have sex sometimes and i rush around at work like crazy all the time and both activities make me sweat and breathe quickly.  So would these things make it ok to say yes the next time a doctor or gym bunny asks me if i exercise?

lazy

lazy,

Maybe. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services currently recommends 30-minutes of exercise on most days to lower one’s risk of chronic diseases. They also say that comprehensive exercise routines include aerobic activity, strength training, and movement that promotes flexibility.  So, if you are bench-pressing your partner, trying positions that allow a wide range of motion, or race-walking from meeting to meeting, for a half-hour everyday, I suppose you can indeed respond affirmatively to the exercise question.

Rushing, and sometimes sex, however, can be coupled with stressors like the meetings themselves and performance pressure.  So, from a stress reduction perspective, your brand of exercise may not provide the level of health-promoting release that comes from swimming, jogging, or jumping rope. This issue is explored a little more in the archived Q&A, Sex For Sleep Sake.

Exercise haters like you sometimes think of exercise as only running for miles, painful abdominal crunches and joining a gym.  Exercise also includes lower-intensity workouts like walking briskly, climbing stairs and doing push-ups in the comfort of your own home. Since you are able to rush around at the office, maybe more mild movement and muscle building wouldn’t be such a big stretch.

Stress management, sexual health, work productivity and general well being love exercise, so here’s hoping that you can at least learn to like it.
