WHITE NOISE AND SWEET DREAMS

Do you know any good ways to block out noise when you’re trying to sleep--I’ve tried those noise machines with nature sounds but they give me nightmares.

Sleepy

Sleepy,

Good old fashion white noise may bring on better sleep and sweeter dreams.  White noise, also called static noise, is constant, unchanging sound that can act as an audio force field—a cone of silence--that prevents dynamic noises like the ones you described from waking you.  Sound machines with evenly flowing streams and falling rain work for some, but exotic birds mating in the jungle aren’t always static or pacifying, as you noted.

The original white noise machines are still used today in doctors’ and counselors’ offices where sound privacy is the goal and they can be purchased by sleepless consumers who want them for personal use.  There might also be things around the house that will produce the static noise you need including fans, air conditioner fans and fish tank filters.

Can you directly address any of the sources of noise in your nightlife such as a snoring room or bed mate?  Can you or the noisemaker move to a different room to reduce or eliminate the unwanted sounds?  Have you tried earplugs, or earplugs combined with white noise?

PS from Les: If you find the noise you’re looking for, make sure it’s not so successful that it also screens out your alarm clock and smoke detectors.
